The Red House Bexley is our local National Trust property, situated less than a mile from our home and a lovely place to go to when you want a break from the bustle of town. We have been taking our children there regularly since they were born – whatever the season!
About Joan
Joan has been a volunteer gardener at The Red House Bexley for the past 6 years. She commutes from her Central London home every week to volunteer for the National Trust.
The gardens at The Red House are beautiful and when we visited in the early Spring, the weather felt more like early Summer! Joan was busy weeding the beds and preparing them for the season ahead. We had a chat about the origins of tulips and plants in general. After our chat, Joan was kind enough to allow us to take photographs of her for our project.
The Red House was designed for the one of the arts and craft movement main influences, William Morris, by architect Philip Webb in 1859-60. Throughout the property, the National Trust has maintained it’s original arts and craft style with many original features present including ornamental tiling, stained glass, wallpaper and furnishings.
For us, the gardens are the joy of the property and are especially beautiful in the Spring and Summer. We have to thank volunteers such as Joan for giving up their time to look after them for the many visitors who appreciate their beauty.
