For week 8 of our ’52 Portraits’ project we popped down to Bexley based studio Toto Caelo. We had arranged to meet hair and make-up artist Charis Tyrrell, known as Carrie, the studio owner.
When we met Carrie at her studio, in the middle of Bexley village, she was coping with the clear-up following water damage! Carrie’s Mum was there to give a helping hand, and amidst all their problems they both found time to sit and chat with us. In fact, we chatted for so long that we only narrowly avoided a parking fine!
As well as being the owner and stylist at Toto Caelo, Carrie has worked extensively in the fashion, film and television industry including working on Downton Abbey, feature films such as This Beautiful Fantastic and Monsters of The Dark Continent and for fashion house shows for Cartier and Dior. She will probably kill us for mentioning this – as she is totally unassuming and discrete when it comes to her work and her clients!
Carrie offers hair styling and make-up applications for visitors to the studio, wedding hair and make-up including trials and also, teaches how to achieve the perfect make-up and hair-styling.
There are people who have an innate sense of creativity, and Carrie (and we suspect her whole family!) clearly have an eye for design and style! Despite the water damage to her studio, you could sense what a relaxing and creative space it was. It was light and bright and filled with stylish accessories and furniture. We have often debated whether or not to get a studio, and must confess to a bit of studio envy after our visit! As location photographers there isn’t the need to have a studio base, but even so…
