Wedding Cakes – Iced or Naked, How Do You Choose Yours?

Wedding Cakes – there are so many styles to choose from so how do you go about choosing one for your wedding day?

When photographing a wedding we are lucky enough to see some amazing cake designs, and we make sure we capture plenty of images of the wedding cake as it will feature prominently in our clients’s wedding albums. We photograph the cake from many different angles and often use these for a collage design on an album page. Our brides have gone to so much trouble to choose the style and design of their wedding cake we like to ensure their ideas are captured forever!

The two main types of cake we see are the traditional iced wedding cake – whether a sponge or fruit based filling – or a naked wedding cake where there is no icing surrounding the cake but rather layers of sponge dressed with flowers, fruits and cream and jam fillings inside.

So, what are the features (and benefits) of each type of cake:

Iced Wedding Cakes

  • A traditional wedding cake finish with  fruit or sponge cake.
  • Individual cakes which can be stacked and stored after the wedding and kept as Christening cakes for a future date…
  • Usually well structured cakes in stable tiers – typically 2-3 tiers but can be much higher with the right support.
  • The opportunity to use a wide variety of finishes and decorations – piping, iced or painted.
  • Can be combined with a tower or layer of cupcakes.

Naked Wedding Cakes

  • A contemporary look – especially at rustic marquee and barn weddings.
  • Beautiful to look at with the layers of sponge, jam, buttercream, etc. being visible. Quite a lot more unstable than a traditional iced cake!
  • Often considered a healthier option with much less sugar than traditional iced cakes.
  • Looks stunning with seasonal fresh fruit and flowers.

Below are some examples of gorgeous wedding cakes which we have photographed:

Whatever type of cake you choose for your wedding, or however you style your venue, Oakhouse Photography will capture the details for you to remember your special day and wedding cake, long after the last morsel has been eaten!!

Which is your preferred style of cake and how would you decorate it? We would love to hear from you!

Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School Prom 2016

Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School Prom 2016 | Oakhouse PhotographyTunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School Prom 2016:

We were contacted earlier this year by Rebecca from Tunbridge Wells Girl’s Grammar School (TWGGS) Prom Committee to photograph their Year 6 Leaver’s Prom at the lovely Hadlow Manor Hotel, in Kent. We really enjoy photographing proms so we jumped at the chance to photograph at this lovely location.

Hadlow Manor Hotel is a Grade 2 Listed Georgian manor house with a modern function room where the prom was being held. It also has wonderful gardens.

Approximately 170 pupils and staff from Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School were anticipated for the evening’s event. Unfortunately, the weather forecast was not particularly kind; rain was expected to fall throughout the day and evening. However, as it turned out, the rain managed to hold off for the most part to allow us to capture the guests arrival in their glamorous prom dresses and evening suits. Our approach on the evening was straightforward, we captured students (and staff) as they arrived at Hadlow Manor Hotel and photographed them either in friendship groups, couples or individual shots (whatever they requested) and before moving onto reportage photography as the evening progressed.

Hadlow Manor Hotel is a great venue to hold a prom, event or wedding, and we would especially like to give a shout-out to the hotel staff who made us feel very welcome and for which nothing was any trouble.

It was a pleasure to be part of the TWGGS 2016 Prom and we very much hope to be a part of their event next year.

Here are a selection of photographs from the evening…

Shepherd Neame Faversham Wedding of Jennifer & Andrew

We were delighted when Jenny and Andy approached us to photograph their Faversham wedding which was to be held at the famous Shepherd Neame Brewery. The brewery was a new wedding venue location for us and what an exciting range of photographic opportunities it presented!

We arranged for a pre-wedding photo shoot with Jenny and Andy at Hall Place Bexley shortly before the wedding and this was also the perfect time to finalise the wedding day timings and photography. Using an image from the photo shoot we presented Jenny and Andy with a signing frame for their guests to write messages for them on on the wedding day itself.

Jenny and Andy were keen on us capturing their wedding day in a documentary wedding photography style as they only wanted a few individual and formal group shots so that they could be as relaxed as possible. This is our normal way of working – to be unobtrusive as possible to allow our couples, their families and friends to enjoy the wedding day without feeling under-pressure to have to wait for certain shots.

On the day of the wedding, Jenny and Andy seemed very relaxed – possibly the benefit of having had a pre-wedding photo shoot before-hand or perhaps the relaxed atmosphere of the brewery itself played a part. We should give a special shout out to Samantha Jeal, the Shepherd Neame’s wedding co-ordinator, who was very friendly, highly professional and a pleasure to work with.

Andy and his men arrived and after a few informal shots in the bar and outside, they went to the ceremony room, located above the Shepherd Neame’s Visitor Centre, to await Jenny’s arrival.

Saturday is a market day in the square outside the brewery and this led to a wonderful atmosphere, especially on Jenny’s arrival with her father in a Beaufort convertible vintage car.

Jennifer and Andrew had a wonderful ceremony on the first floor of the Visitor Centre, which dates back to the 15th Century and has exposed timber beams from which hops were hung, followed by canapés in the exclusive bar area below which had a fine range of Shepherd Neame’s ales and Pimm’s available for their guests.

Afterwards, Jennifer and Andrew went for a short drive while we headed down to the Creek for bride and groom portraits – although the drive was a little longer than intended!! After capturing some wonderful images of the two of them, we returned to the brewery to undertake the formal group photographs with family and friends. We were very fortunate as Samantha allowed us access onto the walkway above the courtyard which meant negotiating our way safely past the vats to photograph the entire group.

The evening was celebrated in The Old Brewery Store with it’s bar and function room where the meal (which was wonderful by the way!), speeches and evening entertainment including live band was held.

Many congratulations to Jenny and Andy on having such a wonderful wedding day and we wish them all the happiness in their lives together.

Shepherd Neame Brewery Wedding Photography

Shepherd Neame Brewery: Wedding Venue Kent

The Shepherd Neame Brewery at Faversham is a truly special venue for a wedding. It is steeped in history as Britain’s oldest brewer (1698 is the Brewery’s official founding date) and has a very special atmosphere. It is also still very much a working brewery! A Shepherd Neame Brewery wedding is simply unique!

The Visitor Centre features a 15th Century function room which, with its wealth of exposed beams and superb octagonal crownpost, provides a cosy, comfortable and friendly atmosphere for ceremonies and receptions. We loved the intimacy of this room, and the attention to detail with the hop decorations and magnificent beer bottle chandelier. There are views over the Market Square which we used to give a different perspective on the arrival of the bride too!

Faversham Wedding Venue

The Brewhouse at the heart of the brewery is also licensed for ceremonies and for larger groups. The Old Brewery Store, is a full of character too! We thought it worked particularly well for wedding receptions as it’s decorated with vintage inn signs. This gives the room a real ambience of its own and can yet it’s large enough to accommodate up to 150 guests, plus live bands etc… Faversham Creek is also a few minutes walk from the brewery, and a lovely spot for wedding photos too!

We were enormously impressed with the wedding co-odinator, Samantha Jeal. Samantha clearly enjoys her job and takes time to get to know couples, their guests and their wedding suppliers on the day. Here’s what Sam told us about her role:

I just treat people as I would expect to be. I arrange appointments suitable to my couples even if its evenings, as my working week is never straight forward! I work closely with them on the run up and they can contact me as many times as they need to (or come in and see me), and then I am there on the day to ensure that everything we have discussed happens without them having to think about it. You do become attached to couples as with some weddings they may have been in the planning for a couple of years ,so you do get to know them quite well and at the end of the day you are helping plan one of the biggest days of their lives. I think the best bit is when couples come back just to have a cup of tea or a pint or even better introduce me to their first baby!!

It’s unusual to find a venue which has both a sense of space and intimacy too, for us as wedding photographers, a Shepherd Neame wedding ticks both those boxes brilliantly!
